Here is an inter-active map with Points of Interest

Within the Georgia Straight, between the BC mainland and the east side of southern Vancouver Island, just north of the San Juan Islands, lay the Southern Gulf Islands, including North and South Pender Islands. Boasting a mild sub-Mediterranean climate and pristine wilderness, Pender Island is perfect for a get away or a special place to call your home. We receive less rain than Vancouver or Seattle, and more sunshine.

The Capital Regional District has created an interactive Natural Areas Map which is extremely useful.

Bridge between North and South Pender
Mortimer Spit - just across the bridge

The Pender Islands, both North and South, were originally one island connected by an isthmus. This is a site that was used by the Coast Salish First Nations for thousands of years, and has a rich history. A canal was dredged in the early 1900's to allow boats quicker, safer passage between the islands. The two islands were later connected in 1955 by a one-lane bridge, which is still in use today. The majority of Pender's population resides on North Pender, where the majority of the services and amenities are located. South Pender is more rural with the exception of Poets Cove Resort and Spa, formerly known as Bedwell Harbour Resort.

Pender Island, about 36 square kilometres in size, houses around 2,500 full time residents, a figure that more doubles during the busy summer months when seasonal residents and visitors arrive to take advantage of the recreational opportunities. Many of Pender Island's residents are active within the community. There are many organizations for both adults and children, such as Kids' Club, Play Group, Parent Advisory Council, Newcomers' Club, Meals on Wheels, and Let's Go Walking. The strong sense of community and a willingness to help your neighbour makes Pender Island a safe and prosperous place to raise a family.

The islands are accessible by boat as there are three public docks, Port Browning, Port Washington and Hope Bay. The BC Ferries run daily sailings between Otter Bay on Pender Island and Swartz Bay, near Victoria on Vancouver Island, Tsawwassen, near Vancouver, as well as additional outer Gulf Islands, such as Mayne, Saturna, and Galiano Islands. If the ferries aren't for you, there are scheduled daily flights by Seair Seaplanes and Harbour Air, which operate float planes between the Gulf Islands and the lower mainland.

Pender has many trails to hike and beaches to comb, as well as many other outdoor recreation opportunities, including exceptional boating and kayaking, camping, fishing and disc golfing. There are 37 beach access points on Pender – more for our size than any other Gulf Island . Beach accesses and hiking trails are marked with a roadside sign. At the north end of the island you can hike George Hill and arrive at a beautiful viewpoint, or for a bit more of a challenge, head over to South Pender for a climb through Beaumont National Park or up to the top of Mount Norman for a view truly worth the hike. Medicine Beach Nature Sanctuary is also a great place to enjoy one of the last wetlands in the Gulf Islands . Watch the sunset at Thieves Bay, a most spectacular sight. There is always something to explore on Pender!

Prefer dining over hiking? Pender Island has a variety of restaurants. For an exquisite dinner try Islanders' Restaurant, just a stones throw from the ferry terminal. Enjoy wonderful world-class cuisine at Pistou Grill, prepared by a master chef. Traveling by boat? Try Hope Bay Café or Port Browning Pub and Café for breakfast, lunch or dinner. We even have a winery now! Visit Morning Bay Vineyard and enjoy a sip in their tasting room. Or is art your thing? The islands are home to many talented artists and artisans, many of which have studios that are open during the summer months, and are definitely worth a visit. In addition, be sure to enjoy the popular local Farmer's Market at the Community Hall every Saturday morning, from late spring to early fall; there's everything from local produce to hand crafted goods.
